Kevin was
born on December 13th and
raised in Tacoma, WA. If you asked him
what his favorite type music is, all you
would get would be a confused, blank look
on his face. He has played the gamut of
different styles of music.
He started his love for music growing up in
the 70’s listening to KJR and picking up an
old cracked acoustic guitar. The summer of
’77 friends on the block were starting a band
and the only instrument left was the bass.
And so there it started. He practiced
everyday for hours soaking up every lick he
could take in. He would jam along with
records and 8 track tapes of all the 70’s rock
bands like Ted Nugent, Led Zeppelin, The
Who, Sabbath and Rush. During that time he
went to see The Who’s movie "The Kids
Are Alright" which changed his playing
style forever " I couldn’t believe the way
John Entwistle used his right hand, it blew
me away"Soon after,
Fusion Jazz entered his musical
life as well as the English blues like John
Mayall, Cream and American Blues rock
like The Allman Brothers. He dug deeper
into these styles while playing in Top
40/Rock bands around the South End,
discovering Robert Johnson, BB King, and
John Lee Hooker.
Being a bassist he found that there
was a lot
of work to be had because of the lack of
good players around the area. "Everyone
wanted to be the guitar player or drummer!"
So he ended up playing at times in several
different bands at once. In the span of 20
plus years he ended up playing gigs doing |

Rock, Blues, Jazz, Classical, Top 40,
Musical Theater, Big Band, Country, Metal,
improvised noise and anything else that can
be thrown at him. Some of the music that
has changed him, is stuff by John Coltrane,
Kate Bush, Bobby McFerrin and Tower of
Power.
As time went by he
discovered that you are
influenced by everything not just music.
"Eating a large meal or nothing at all before
you play can effect the way you play just as
drinking too much beer or coffee." Listening
to all the musicians he plays with is another
thing he strives for. "Hey, it’s fun hearing
the good and bad notes everyone else plays."
"Yes boys, that why he is smiling at you…"
"Being a part of Latigo
Lace has been a
musical highlight in my career."
"Performing with people you can get along
with is half the battle." "Everyone has an
ego but in Latigo, it’s just more laid back."
So now you can catch Kevin trying to learn
the 2 step while playing bass or maybe a
Cha Cha 5, 6, 7, 8.…………….. |
